- Julian Garcia and Javier Teijeiro archaeologists and architects
- are responsible for a study that harshly criticizes the first phase of rehabilitation of this monument
"Remove items such as covering them with plaster Almohad seating is crazy"
They met at a conference and had much in common because they both had written books on the same subject: the bastion fortress of Badajoz. Of course, each in his field, and Julian Garcia Javier Teijeiro is an archaeologist and architect. Both believe they are disciplines that must work together and so they came together to help the Platform for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of the Alcazaba. A few months ago, had access to draft the first phase of the works that will run on the monument Almohad and after extensive study, its findings are very critical. Believe that such intervention would be an absurdity that would result in irretrievable loss of the most valuable of the Alcazaba.
- How does it feel to see the Alcazaba without rehabilitation?
TEIJEIRO -JAVIER: So very sad, but not limited to the Alcazaba is abandoned, also fortified bastions, all the historic fabric of the Old Town feel like we loaded ... It still keeps throwing money at silly things when we have a fort of San Cristobal that falls there. No one has criteria and improvise without serious study.
-always said that is the most important Alcazaba Spain ...
-JULIAN GARCIA: It is, but for me the important thing is that this is the Fortress of Badajoz, the rest is secondary. It's a sentimental value, rather than monumental.
"As an archaeologist, what is the biggest mistake of those who has complained in the first phase of rehabilitation?
-JG: (He thinks) It's hard to decide, but more serious is the removal of items without a previous study, the stalls that is plastered Almohad, ie the plug. It seems crazy and it seems anyone with a bit of sensitivity to the monument, which has a little attachment and affection to something that is an emblem for Badajoz.
"If plaster, is sunk.
-JG: I'm afraid so.
"In general, how valued the rehabilitation project?
-JT: The project made by these two architects to the Ministry of Culture is based on three important parts that we cast on the ground in our report. The first is the treatment of all the parapet of the wall between the car door and Alpéndiz. It is an evenly with prefabricated concrete slabs and steel railing 60x120, means you will lose all information that provides the parapet at the moment, because it has to rest, presumably Islamic, which will be lost if not done a study before. The second point is a whole series of new works for accessible Coracha door, is going to be a platform below the new concrete plant site run white tone, with two grand staircases. These two works will cost a fortune and attack from the aesthetic point of view of the monument. And third, put the condom all the canvas between the door and Alpéndiz cars plastered all, that is, covering it.
"Instead of that project, what you propose?
-JT: In our report we say that these three million should be raised from the sustainability and performance instead of mortar, plaster of many meters of cloth and all construction of new plant, our view is that action should be more sustainable and austere. You have to put that money into other things, not new works, but focus on three key concepts in this Alcazaba: restoration, consolidation and rehabilitation.
- Do you believe that the Platform can stop the project?
JT: Platform are people who do not charge for this work and defend very well the Alcazaba. The experience, however, has shown me that the city of Badajoz the most badly wanted to have been political. We demand to reconsider the project and the platform is used so, but we are in a society in which politicians do not have citizens' groups. There is money, the work is about to be awarded and I have no hope.
-JG: Undoubtedly, an archaeologist would prevent it. If had one in the project, would not support it.
- What advise the City Council now is doing the project in the second and third phase?
JG: To respect the law and go. When making a report, done by a multidisciplinary team and communicate. Not that everyone do their work separately and in the end there is a comprehensive rehabilitation project but several unconnected projects.
JT: My biggest advice is to take care of a serious scientific research laboratory specializing in archeology and architecture before tackling a project.
