Introductory remarks exposure
On Mount Instincts Historian Eusebio Leal Spengler

City December 3, 2004

is extremely pleased to be able in today, performing the official opening of this beautiful shows that under the title of Mount Instincts very precious contains a selection of his work.
I would also say the intense emotion cause we in the solitude of that hour when had not yet conducted the opening ceremony not only see but to penetrate the secret and mysterious world of work. In the certain preciousness of his work as an artist in the truest sense and deeper of the word. Beautiful
not only in form but in the background, precious in the quest for the true picture of who we are or were human after which wanders from the paradise that had in Palestine or in Africa today, and the search for exact real and what passes for our current awareness that no explanation of the Cuban will never be sure if mistakenly dispensed to meet face to face with the African world, it also means with Cuban world, such an explanation of reality is only a phone call from the blood, but a strong appeal to the culture, that culture from the time the country also became the land of others and not only the initial parents, indigenous people from island to island descended from the Amazon on the Amazon and Orinoco to the Greater Antilles and stopped here at the immensity of the gulf. It was another, when the ships left on the African coast to transit the Atlantic survivors, said Jose Luciano Franco far one of the forgotten Cuban historians, who ran the yoke infinitely material released and believe that by setting would be the continent once again unaware of the sea that unites us than divides us and makes an island of the archipelago not only geographically but also as a stronghold and bastion of sleep and weight today archipelago say that he is from another island would give us the right to consider and not a single island, Cuba.
What happens is that the Cuban all-encompassing, all these rocks and islets even the island of San Juan Evangelista, La Isla de Pinos, Treasure Island, the Isle of Youth where he is an exponent. In his wonderful cure

Over the years, as the waves seem to move you, but always are equal to step in my soul, but the portrait that evokes in my first words is no longer the mirror of Narcissus, we are today in this beautiful exhibition of paintings, where the African dazzling full weight of his dignity lies before us , was presented to me when Ife Boni came to Cuba and came to Old Havana and met at the home of Africa with African community representatives descendant of the Tatas and the Gobbos of Nigeria who had a meeting in the place came also the director, the Rector of the University of Ife, when I hear talk in the voices of prayers to the orishas Cubans, the Ger same Pier had discovered during his trip to Cuba almost a half century ago, the same as Fernando Ortiz interrogated with dramatic urgency to their age at the home of L.

RAFAEL M. CALVO AND INSTINCTS INSTINCTS OF MONTE DEL MONTE

By NANCY MOREJON
National Literature Prize 2001

The painter Rafael M. Calvo has a path in their sensitivity to splits into two islands, or rather, who wanted to stand - by choice and in their own right - a sort of rocking swing from a huge island (Cuba) and an island short ( Isla de la Juventud). Promising in that space - surrounded by dreams everywhere - rears its head a good original art so poignant, as fine as taciturn, he bears in her womb and masks waters washed in a masterful play of light and shadows, all land settled by the artist for us to come together from afar, as his office has said so beautifully in this sample. Mount

Instincts is a supplier of ancestral spirits, telluric forces, invoked through a brush and charcoal, to recreate the mood of bronze, like our character, aimed at finding new ways whose emblem is singing to more natural release of integrating components of Cuban culture. This painter, in their communion with their daily short island, walked among African students and their faces go with it, since then, with effective way in which the last century Cubist stopped at the rich example of the Bambara sculptures whose very existence changed the trends of European art forever.

Something has happened. Something has been born as one dives into a sea of identities in absolute seclusion. These works subjugate the viewer's eye to jump for joy at both wonderful mystery between figuration and motives that encourage the peace that the painter has managed to find your inner world and ours. The horizon is non-transferable passes out of these instincts, this mountain quiet, serene, full of signs that surround us on his magical sound communication. This exhibition draws attention of the beholder delayed by pleasure or discipline. Before her, we have to stop and enjoy the gift of Cuban and opacity, its sweet finish material, its proximity, remoteness, in short, its splendid nature. The future issues and we shall confirm the excellent workmanship of this work is already expressed in its proper place will be a favorite. Reader, do not delay your visit to this experience that I assure you will not forget.

Mount Instincts

Thanks to the work of this young Cuban artist, we can move to the latitude of the world, from which came to us a host of ethnic groups, dialects, customs and cult, in short, a vast African humanity dunk over the Caribbean, transformed into a new Chaldean, a new Mediterranean where mixed cultures and civilizations, and the required font, the names of Pedro, Juan Antonio or merged Bartholomew Fula Surnames with Mandinga, Congo, Carabalí ...
With its noble art of mystical resonance, Rafael M. Calvo appropriates masks and other ancient symbols to send a message of human solidarity and racial equality.
And in his home town, the Isle of Youth, perhaps as nowhere else in the world, is met Marti's maxim:

native of the small island where no one grows old, has Rafael Calvo (Klvo) his mind still full of conflicting ideas, dreams that take-over and time-to seek wisdom in the continent where the human species was born. I had thought since childhood
in this great adventure, "to discover the truth-in his own words, but I thought of all that when we had no choice: they came first ..." Thousands of black teenagers crossed the ocean from 1977 and, as if had served a purpose, Africa emerged before his eyes as part of that little island of Cuba.
not needed then the young artist to travel across the Atlantic from Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Ethiopia, Congo, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, South Africa, Cape Verde, Ghana, Benin, Mali, Lesotho, Sudan , Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Burundi, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Niger ...
was enough to invoke the Che Guevara and, camera in hand, marched through the international schools of his native Isle of Youth with a primary goal behind the lens, capturing how each of the African nations represented there kept its identity, which notable differences between them might go unnoticed even for a fairly seasoned observer.
As a chosen of the gods, Klvo had the privilege of see-in pure-play habits and customs of an old
unfathomable. Supposedly 'primitive', these events were revealed as the acquisition of a primordial collective wisdom of an impossible imaginary
to delete, such as keloids that perpetuated tribal marks on the skin of South African and Sudanese photographed.
And so, what in principle could arise as a kind of intellectual journey to the roots of the afrocubanía remote-as defined by Fernando Ortiz, "became ultimately a much more complex experience that referred to a mysterious depth , translated into signs, images, reflections of another world ...
"crossed" not in vain, was the title of this photographic investigation, with which he graduated from the National Art School in 1990. As a result, had built more than 500 pictures to the gallery world of the human species in a kind of visual dialogue with those marks and facial furrows, with the hair tissues Burkinabe girls smiling ... and other ancient codes as body ornaments and other household items.
I've had forcibly from that precedent to explain the meaning of "Instincts of the mountain," a series that breaks Klvo now in the dynamic and heterogeneous landscape painting Cuban peculiar style which is impossible for this or more member that trend.
And is that beyond the mere pursuit ethnological and anthropological, if you will, too, "Klvo was marked forever by this contact intercultural, for that unique human experience that other correlates aesthetic required to express the full extent of animistic.
"How to transmute the beauty of their faces streaked, how to convey the strength of its mystery? ... "Must have asked over the years, hidden from the creator, the many artists that make their being autobiographical photographer, printmaker, ceramist, painter ... And the answer came by instinct, because it came from within, as whispered the ear by a Muganga (wizard) from the bottom of the hill: "Painting the Masks."
link between the earthly and supernatural, doors open for the ancestors to be integrated back into the pool, some masks are used whenever there is a death in the town ... others only hundreds of years past ...
"Are intercesseurs (advocates) against the unknown and threatening spirits ( ...) weapons to help people not to obey anymore the spirits and be independent. Spirits, the unconscious, emotion, everything is the same. I understood because he was a painter "he said with glee, as if he had found the philosopher's stone-Pablo Picasso to André Malraux after visiting the Trocadero Museum, now the Museum of Man. The same
Klvo understood, but without having to go to Paris. Was enough to cover their small island home, where no one grows old ...
I've had the privilege of seeing currently in the process of creation when, as outlined previously, these fetishes will be provided with energy by the painter, his fingers energy transmitted through the use tenacious of charcoal to achieve effects that compel us to perceive and respect the occult.
Every feeling, from fear to joy, is expressed through art Klvo on the edge between abstraction and figuration, it becomes dark deliberately to underline the depth of the human being, the unconscious, instincts, emotions ... of Mt.
And never forget when, after reaching his home and studio in the middle of a blackout that recalled the thick night of Africa, to be light suddenly appeared before me ... great Dogon mask depicting the Komondo ...

So Eusebio Leal called the creation of this young artist who performed the works that make up the prizes Poetry Contest X Regino Pedroso.

"We found in this work the infinite love. Blessed are those who love as they see in Africa or in Cuba the promised land, "said Eusebio Leal, Historian of Havana, leaving opened one of the most significant samples (Instincts on the Mount) of the renowned painter, illustrator, ceramist and photographer Rafael M. Calvo González, a young artist who this year enhanced by his work the Poetry Contest Prizes Regino Pedroso, which will be delivered on the occasion of National Culture Day.
laurels those winners and special award by the Workers' 35th anniversary, you can enjoy through drawings specially designed and donated by him for this occasion, the "secret and mysterious universe," according to Leal, the artistic production of Calvo: "Undoubtedly, the preciousness of his work as an artist in the truest sense and depths of the word. Beautiful not only in form but in the background, precious in the search for the true picture of who we are or were, after which mankind wanders from the paradise that had in Palestine or in Africa today. " Based
folklorists and ethnological studies that the artist made in his native Isle of Youth, research which drew on the testimony of some young Africans who studied in that territory, come the stories of these works recreated, through a rich and noble imagery-in a cultural phenomenon of intense fertility in the formation and development of our Cuban. Impregnate their drawings that depth of thought that characterizes him, twisted personality which also merge nobility, humor and commitment, time and history in which he lived, Calvo reveals, with uninhibited creative freedom techniques African rhythmic primitivism. Both inks on cardboard and in its medium and large format charcoal on canvas, all achieved a reduction of naturalism synthetic Afro-Caribbean, whose myths are torn between their nature and a clear trend figurative abstractionist.
About his work, the prominent poet Nancy Morejon said, "Calvo sensitivity carries a road that splits into two islands, or rather, who wanted to stand-by choice and in their own right-a sort of swing cuddled a huge island (Cuba) and a short island (Isla de la Juventud). In this space, surrounded by bright dreams everywhere, "rears its head a good original art so poignant, as fine as silent, as it has in its waters and masks involves washed in a masterful play of light and shade, seated all in land meeting the artist for us who come from far away, as his office has said so beautifully in this sample. "
Meanwhile, journalist and critic Calcines Algiers, Havana editor of Opus, said: "I had the privilege of seeing currently in the process of creation when, as outlined previously, these fetishes are being endowed power by the artist, an energy that transmit their fingers through the use of charcoal tough to achieve effects that compel us to perceive and respect the occult.
"Every feeling, from fear to joy, is expressed through art Calvo, on the edge between abstraction and figuration, it becomes dark deliberately to underline the depth of being human unconscious, the emotions ... the instincts of the mountain. "
"It becomes apparent Calvo style. And that is net profit for the artist and Cuban art was pleased to learn how Calvo dynamite certain forms of symbolic perception in the plausible effort to highlight the sign, the suggestion and the new possibilities of expression above the commonplace " emphasized the critical and specialist of the National Council of Plastic Arts, Virginia Alberdi.
"Sometimes I do not know what to admire most in the artist, if his work or being a child of the values of generosity, selflessness, instilled by the Revolution. When you know the works he has given some grandparents' house, the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba, the Association of Economists, dependencies of the office of the Republic, to the administration of People's Power or his work in creating a ceramic mural in Pinar del River, we realize that marketing has tempted others, has not touched the virtues, love for art, this young man. " So
said Rolando Rodriguez Garcia, adviser of the Council of Ministers, and Vice President of Latin American Scientific and Cultural Foundation José Martí, Spain, which won its work on Calvo Martí, displayed, along with other pieces of his, on the Executive Committee Council of Ministers, which was part of the annual award in 2003 gave this institution to Dr. Concepción Campa, director of the Finlay Institute and discoverer of the meningococcal vaccine.
So that this young artist and his work, which honors the tenth edition of Regino Pedroso, whose call ends this August 31.

SIGNS NEW ORIGINAL ART CALVO

By Virginia Alverdi

For those who keep their sense of wonder, beautiful human ability to vibrate at an event that wonder, or leads to a state close to levitation, this eye contact with a work of impeccable technique, where a stubborn artist, imagination generous and right hand in the use of charcoal as part of mixed media works of original invoice, is the sign that Rafael Calvo presented in these paintings, enigmatic embodiment in which it appears the saga of an investigation that still has much to offer fruit . Far from the image
folk and cheaply than has so damaged the memory, these works are embodied in the symbols enclosed in the tribal marks that are present in the face of Africans, many of them lived with us in schools in the field Isle of Youth, a stage at which the daily epic made a territory steeped in legends of pirates and buccaneers, a land of promise.
without reasonable the aplatanado and strife in their concepts, the creation of the Isle of Youth artist making his notes and photos of the force that makes these works, in which regular lines and lines become stronger, to achieve this sense of depth. Are signs, elements of a strong culture that emerge in an environment somewhat alien to consolidate their presence.

Why Is My Cervix High When Period Due

A CHINESE STORY OR HOW TO PAINT A CRITICAL

By Francisco García González

has a Chinese legend that on one occasion, an emperor was a teacher bring to the palace to paint him a crab. The painter, who knew of his office, called home, servants, food and ten-year term. The emperor agreed. So the expiry, the teacher sat in front of a table, took the brush and painted a single gesture most perfect crab ever existed. There was worth the wait. The emperor owned just crab embodying all possible crabs.
But the above anecdote is this: a tall tale. The final story is about. A lot.
Gallos, portraits, still lifes and devils spring clumsy, funny, weightless as Romanesque. A party arrested in the police sense, or captured by the boundaries and creating suspicion. The profusion iconographic Rafael Calvo as in life or in Ecclesiastes: what is and was, it will be like until the end of the day. From Landry to the forefront. And from there to present the Cuban art has a meager amount of archetypes. How
had to wait this figuration false or suspicious? The long, and above all, winding road to it has been reversed. Calvo, prisoner infinite line, then photographed, such as theses, several African princes with their vassals in search of tribal marks including significant meanings and was launched into an abstraction in the fight giving the kitsch and masochism alike. (The first thing for the invitation to use phrases contained in the likes and comforting, and always hope: "Woe how cute!". And the masochism of the technique and the bill: make an engraving without attachments, materials and other requirements, and print up stamps, as many as a mega company for several years of work, or draw lines to give back to Ecuador. Good trap that the office).
The crab met his Chinese teacher, or the Emperor, with just a touch. For cautious one should never doubt the Chinese stories. From there come tea, Tai Chi, the cult of patience, gunpowder, Kongfu, fried rice, acupuncture, and ointment tao china. I'm sure all that was in the crustacean of the emperor. A thousand miles in time and space, the configuration of Calvo, he assures us, is akin to the mystery of oriental art. If we go looking for the abstraction of a rooster in which crab will discover something of the emperor, not bad the way back.
Fifteen years after stepping into the maze of abstraction, pita No figures in a single stroke. The cardboard, or canvas, are imbued with light bands worthy of Rabo Karabekian in minimalist stage. (What Funny, now that I remember, Kurt Vonnegut in Blue Beard, a biography of the Armenian artist, explains the transition from realism to postwar Runner and from there to minimalism and the latter back to figuration. The painter walked in a circle. Nor he was free). And on light, Calvo literally begins to release the soul. On top of the illuminating touches the infinite path of the lines in charcoal, pen or brush.
This is the hard work that beats in every human endeavor. A Sacher-Masoch would have liked to deal with one of these half-finished pieces. Entreat him as much as his stern wife. Not to mention the enjoyment. Mysteries of joy. How not to enjoy: begin to appear, line by line, hundreds of thousands of lines of light, roosters, devils, vases. So for several weeks. Calvo unlike the Chinese master is a prisoner of the line. Calvo
While out on a journey back in reverse, heavy abstraction is always manages to take its toll. It's the old trick of avant-garde turned into action as anything else. The cock, the vase or the face look like landscapes seen from a great height. He is the author's private universe. If the painter of the emperor was traveling in mind, anyone like Calvo has flown on the adjoining stretch of the Caribbean between Cuba and the Isla Evangelista. And every journey is a passion traffic from one place to another. Under light traffic on the ground.
the end a man is also painting pictures, it does not matter a rooster, a fish, a chair or a rabbit. Never mind the enjoyment or penance and the agony of creation, or why are painted. In front of a work and their tracks, import only the line and light. The road was left behind is this: Chinese tale, however much we have to see.

GALLO

converging lines of RAFAEL CALVO ON THE GALLERY OF LIGHT AND TRADES
By Jorge Rivas

Traces, or rather metaphors of Cuban, artistic creations become Rafael Calvo (Nueva Gerona, 1970), exhibited at this year's Havana Biennial in one of the main halls of the Uffizi Gallery and Light, in which the viewer enjoys a masterful performance of woven lines of different sizes, through which a visual discourse that transcends its impressive variety of textures and contrasting effects.
After venturing into the vast universe of abstraction, bold and daring, Calvo breaks this time on a hackneyed theme: Afro-Cuban culture, which reverses, not to mention a detailed study of which manifest talent, patience and imagination-in new iconography of signs and figures defining a crucial moment in the evolution of a style "adventure" and enigmatic in this work takes us from a free draw to the synthesis of geometric line, from drawing to painting, and from the concrete to the essentials. Based
folklorists and ethnological studies that the artist made in his native Isle of Youth, research which drew on the experiences of some young African testimony that in the decade of the 80 attend school in that territory, arise narratives of these works recreated in an intense cultural phenomenon of fertility in the formation and development of our Cuban. Calvo
reveals, with uninhibited creative freedom, rhythmic techniques of African primitivism. Both inks on cardboard and in its medium and large format charcoal on canvas, a reduction achieved all Afro-Caribbean synthetic naturalism, whose myths are torn between their nature and a clear trend figurative abstractionist. Inquiries Artist
take shape through the convergence of continuous lines, flexible, sometimes resulting in small grids curves and circles. Iconography of some of the African deities and mystical Mount thick with lush vegetation, the symbolism of blackness, the African liturgy and syncretism and fusion derived from meeting of two cultures, are summarized in guidelines, stains and structures that make allusive language and autonomous.
A peculiar characteristic is prevalent throughout this series of papers presented by Calvo in the Biennial of Havana. While the exhibition's title may suggest, in addition to the technique used in the preparation of the tables, the convergence of different cultures, syncretism between the Catholic religion, inherited from Spain, and the Yoruba, Africa, is a careful revelation of the phenomenon that transcends today. In these recreations preserving aesthetic premise highlighted by Don Fernando Ortiz: Blacks brought as slaves to Never been properly Christianized America, so that syncretism was no more than a simple translation of the names of beings or deities of each of these religions. Looking carefully
and enter each of these works are the most diverse experience sensations. In addition to the poetry they radiate, there is a rhythm that shakes and exalts. Inside each piece exudes a vibe that recalls the magic secret of engaging and leather drums sounded lucumíes Yorubas and blacks in the tyrannical courses in the Caribbean as they sang and danced in desperate prayers of freedom and longing. Calvo
Each work is an example of an unforgiving domain technical exercise to perfection. His strokes monochrome, usually black (ink or charcoal), spread on surfaces slightly worked with other pigments (yellow, gray, blue and ocher sober and warm) that emphasize the "naivete? mystique that attacks the specific budgets allocated to false values of contemporary folk art. However, reflective creation and expression is inserted into the avant-garde art, which has earned a place of recognition, it becomes very personal repertoire of forms with many different variations, arising from life itself. __________________________________

transit As a result of abstraction, the works of Rafael Calvo held a variety of signs, which allows you to address the multiplicity of lines, the integration of strokes to articulate a framework of elements, sometimes family, sometimes completely unknown, but related to each other, whether carriers of novelty or a priori repetition.
In some of his works emerge fragments of a world heritage converging elements of African culture among us, mysterious, yet intimate harmony peculiar codes. Is not free, or folklore that presence: the saga Previous painstaking research, which gave body to his watchful eye on the tribal marks on the face of young Africans during the years of the eighties studied at schools of his native Isle of Youth event This allowed him to lean out an otherness full of questions persist. The validity of artistic endeavor lies in the assimilation of those experiences underground, amalgamated in the vision that has the skin Calvo and aesthetic nature of meaning.
figures vanish in linear strokes, a non-free games, in which we can estimate the spontaneous rhythmic composition, that to entice the viewer, to catch him. The ritual of this meeting is developed gradually after the line in pursuit hypnotic that does not leave until you get the perfect picture taking, or the appropriation of the spirit that has imposed on this fad creator.
In some of these works, particular forms and symbols are repeated with insistence, to finally form the atmosphere of organically prepared compositional elements, which constitute the whole image, a cohesion that is accepted as part of this world back to itself, although Open-such is the dialectic of the creator.
sometimes rambling, but always powerful and vital, we presents the poetic revelation. They are fragments of dreams that arise in the middle of the vigil, which concern without distress.
As in the past with color, now gray and black strokes of ocher demonstrate the skill of the artist, his creative energy and a zeal peculiar austerity. At work with charcoal as the pen, it requires rigor-ever waste-the artist.
Ultimately, Calvo is inserted into a plastic proposal clears the representativeness matérica enigmas, designed this time by a different, much more alive and present in comparison with topical references that were once taken as approval levels our medium. Calvo
dynamite symbolic perception, in the plausible effort to highlight the sign, suggestion, the possibility beyond the platitudes and made surfaces. _______________________________________

AFRICAN APPRENTICE
for Francisco García González

Sometimes you discover that passes through a path not chosen. It is the way he throws. I have before me a three-headed Elegua, an image of startling power. Lie along the mighty trunk stylized sketches of naked creatures await the hands of the learner. But the apprentice wizard does?, What?, Talks about the price of charcoal, the same spent in a dark landscape that weaves behind a face or mask, to kill African. The plans are suggesting a possibility of perspective at all costs, despite the ambiguity between figuration and abstraction some decorative. Attending the act of creation is a funny thing, the attacker eavesdrops on the mystical moment and suddenly all the trades repairs become tedious, it's all the same settings as the apprentice ...
-------- ----------------------------------------
all started thanks to the internationalism, proletarian, he say. The island located south west of our platform in 1976, a proposal for a champion of African nationalism, he changed his name Pines by the Youth. That was how the Isle of Youth was filled with students of other lands. The world had changed somewhat: the blacks who were previously brought to this country as slaves, now came to study and then return to their countries, but the same trip after all. And the means to travel ahead of an otherness that the original customs exist or are treated as other or disappear. The youth remained intact in some way ..
Maybe it was in any street of Nueva Gerona the arts apprentice Rafael Calvo noticed that those young people who walked through the town, displayed on their faces and hairstyles distinguishing marks arcane and certainly owners of old messages, far away.
an artist's mind burns easily. In the apprentice, the blacks who came from the most fucked up of the possible sites evoked the idea of a fantasy world, foreign, so distant as when the ocean was crossed by galleons crammed with slaves sold by their own brothers. That place was Africa, not Africa or the national champions OSPAAAL, but something instinctive about the vision of blackness, the land where a face crossed by a scar
had a meaning in a mysterious vibrating ancestral sense. It was a good idea to come from an apprentice engraver and not an anthropologist.
Brands and hair began to haunt the aesthetic thought of the learner. What else is Africa? Whatever it was must have been very important to him. Finally, after intense lobbying blacks were allowed to photograph, perhaps violating the provisions of their tribes. The learner knew then that makes hair and spoke of the place occupied by their owners in the social scale of their villages and surrounding areas. That was his thesis ...
brand owners returned to their farms, or their old metropolis, and the work of the apprentice has had many inquiries, but always returns to the starting point: What else is Africa? An idea that is gaining formal expression in a dense world of frameworks that give rise to a game, figurative or otherwise, in which the same keys and Arcane convey the idea of a journey. The journey to the roots, opposite to the black slaves, or students, to the West.
What else is Africa? "Black braids, rows of princes, palm leaves? "Landscapes from the top, which suggests that the only possible state of salvation is to take up necessary? Will naive look who recreates Elegua, guards and other accessories from the main track in us? Does the darkness of a mysterious world where the unconscious cute? It is a matter of care, the learner is not interested in black here. What else is Africa? A place, is common?, How eternal return? If it were not so bad at all. Back is sometimes not desirable, but in any case always gives up or is inevitable ... and that the learner knows.

_________________________________________ Rafael Calvo, lines and rituals
By: Virginia Alberdi

When talk in these times and with each domain of expressive drawing and sobriety, may not be obvious to Rafael Calvo (Nueva Gerona, 1970 ), as I'm sure you do not have paragraph which have seen his current exhibition converging lines, which is displayed in the Gallery of Light and Crafts in The Habana Vieja.
As a result of transit through abstraction, Calvo works held a variety allows significant that address the multiplicity of lines, the integration of strokes to articulate a framework of elements that make us and other family members sometimes enigmatic, but always related plastic in its definition.
In some of these works emerge from the experiences peculiar imagery of African origin. The experience, if anything, was direct, as in the Isle of Youth, the artist observed marks on the skin rituals carried by students from the continent to which Cuba generously opened their classrooms at the island territory.
But the figures fade in linear strokes, a procedure not without its ludicrous character which appreciates a spontaneous rhythm in the composition to entice the viewer.
As we consider the series as a whole, it is possible to discern particular forms and symbols that are repeated insistently. In this Calvo has put his mark of identity.
As previously done with the color, now gray and black strokes of ocher Sibra demonstrate the skill of the artist, his creative energy and an admirable restraint. Whether at work in charcoal and in the pen, it imposes strict, never waste of talent.
already Calvo style becomes apparent. And that is net profit for the artist and art rejoices Cuban Calvo dynamite know how certain forms of symbolic perception in the plausible effort to highlight the sign, the suggestion and the new possibilities of expression above the commonplace. ______________________________________________________

BY IMAGINATION CALVO
By Dr. Rolando Rodriguez Garcia
May 9, 2003

As every operator when it is genuine, this is an artist of the visual arts (I can not at the end ceñirlo painter) in constant search for expression, to objectify, their worlds. Hence the dramatic transitions, rare, occurring in their spiritual journey.
Just take a look at the dates of the works of Rafael Calvo several catalogs to see the fruitful scores, the open transnmutaciones, that without ceasing to be one and the same, do not hesitate to express in different ways, outstanding image : sometimes abstract, geometric, sometimes semi-figurative, and sometimes amalgamating strokes and images of either bias. With everything he does gives us sight. But not enough. It also was flexible on color, because if sometimes light filled his work, in others wrapped in a profound and mysterious shadows that remind happily Milian.
ductility, fluidity, are synonymous with the painter is not willing to be dominated by the monotony, and by the appreciation of those who want an easy job and sweet, nor any pressure. But equally the mark reflection and conceptualization intense the image to be developed, that of someone who walks ojiabierto to find the magic in your environment that hides and escapes to the profane.
showed early that provision and I realized, impressed the imagination of the artist solvent, when I met who had worked in his native photography and beautiful Isle of Youth, with the idea of leaving the track recorded of young Africans a day invaded in search of bread generously know that Cuba offered. He composed his work in Africa Cuban island, with tribal marks on their faces. In times of cruel
escaseses, Calvo was no doubt admirable work. In this connection I have drawn attention to what is said of him when they lacked resources. In the Isla de la Juventud a presentation in the middle of the special period, and rightly said "Made in Cuba", which showed the 28 crayons in a suggestive and evocative his work and recreated on an experimental and bold characters, "not less real and fanciful. "
This made me remember other times of economic crisis, which were not least, decades ago, when our great teacher, Raúl Martínez, I said: "Being a genius when have the best quality ink and paper to make the best poster, not worth it. The problem is a genius when you have the worst ink in the world and the worst part. "
Press for printing engravings, clay or canvas, are not means distant, ignored for the time that plastic Calvo in his teaching gives us a work full of harmony and vitality.
But sometimes do not know what to admire most in the artist, if his work or being a child of the values of generosity, selflessness, instilled by the Revolution.
When you know the work that has delivered to a grandparents' house, the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba, the Association of Economists, dependencies of the office of the Republic, to the administration People's Power, or his work in creating a ceramic mural in Pinar del Rio, we realize that marketing has tempted others, has not touched the virtues, love for art of this young man. This would seem to me that in the case of his compatriots has established an emulation of kindness, tenderness, or in that region of Cuba, defended tooth and nail for thieves not wrested north of Cuban sovereignty, the beauty of virtue seems touchingly wild.
I witness on this exception. Please note that Calvo has now donated to the Latin American Scientific and Cultural Foundation José Martí, Spain, eye, Armando Hart and the speaker are his deputies, his work on Marti, recently exposed in the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers, which will be part of the annual prize to be delivered soon that institution and that this time has been given to Dr. Concepción Campa, director Finlay Institute and discoverer of the meningococcal vaccine. Know that previously Marti works on Cuban artists and Vicente R. Santos Serpa Bonachea, respectively have been delivered to Mario Benedetti and Rigoberta Menchu. For everything that I can affirm that the many merits accumulated by the work of this artist, in the events in which he participated at all have been free. Pulse have been obtained, by dint of imagination and gallant task.
